Students in the Senior High at United Local participate in forty-minute reader's or writer's workshop. The workshop model has three components: mini-lesson, independent work and share time. The workshop model allows students to have choice in reading and writing, which fosters ownership. Independent reading or writing time is built into the schedule so students have an opportunity to confer with peers and his or her teacher. Sharing is also an important part of the workshop model where students are encouraged to share written work or stories of interest. Active learning is taking place during the workshop and structured more like a laboratory and less like a lecture.
